Stages

Modded stages are always made to replace a specific stage and will only work when overriding the stage it was intended for.  It is possible to extend the stage roster to fit multiple mods of the same stage, but that is a topic for another day.

Stages are stored in stages/melee folder as .PAC files.  To replace a stage you just need to replace the corresponding .PAC file.  There are a few stages that have multiple .PAC files because there are multiple versions of the stage that have a chance to load.  For these stages you will need to replace each file.

Some stage hacks will come with a .REL file.  These belong in the module folder.  If the stage you are adding does not come with a .REL file, you must delete the .REL file that corresponds to the stage it replaces so the system will load the original from the disk.  Incorrect .REL files will cause stages to crash or load incorrectly.

The Weaklings of the Pack

I call these guys the weaklings because most of the time, they just can’t get the job done. Of course, it is possible to win playing with them, but let’s assume you’re competing against the best. The funny thing is that most of them are fast characters, which clearly proves that speed isn’t everything. There are a ton of extremely slow characters that perform well in the game due to incredibly strong moves that are just tougher to land — it’s the timing thing! Anyhow, here are the characters that maybe should have just stayed in their own video game:

Yoshi: Some people find Yoshi lovable, but to me, that is exactly the reason why I don’t want to play with him while kicking someone’s butt. It’s not that Yoshi’s moves are bad, they just have that «so what?» feel. For example, his projectile move is to toss eggs, but the eggs crack almost immediately after throwing them. If they do actually land, they have a negligible impact on damage. None of his other moves are particularly strong or difficult to block. In all fairness, Yoshi still may be your best bet out of the four worst characters.

Luigi: Nowhere else does the inferior Mario Bro feel more inferior than in a fighting competition where his brother is also a contestant. Once again, it’s not that Luigi is an awful character to play with, it’s just that: why not play with Mario who is in every way, a step up? Mario throws fire balls. Luigi throws less effective green fire balls. Mario slides and trips his opponents (forward A), while Luigi flails his arms at them. Stepping out of Mario’s shadow is a necessary prerequisite for Luigi to be considered a relevant video game character.

Sonic: Although I was a huge fan of the Sonic and Knuckles game for Sega back in the day, the Sonic in SSBB is just a spinning mess. Every move of his requires a fast spinning motion that generates almost no damage. It’s frustrating to play with Sonic because it feels like you should have the upper hand since he’s so fast, yet in the end you’re just running around the map aimlessly.

Snake: Evidently, Snake hails from the game Metal Gear — yet his gear in this game serves as a detriment when it takes 10 + seconds to set up each of his moves. Snake is the character that could probably lose to all of the rest because he is (a) slow, (b) slow at setting up, and (c) requires setting up. He can throw a lot of visible landmines which are not very helpful, as you can imagine. Maybe he would be interesting to play with if the game were Snake vs. Snake.

4 Smash Has The Omega и Варианты Battlefield

Kirby Stagesedit

There are two stages based on Kirby games. They are the Halberd and Green Greens.

The Halberd is, naturally, a stage that takes place on and around the Battleship Halberd from Kirby Super Star. The stage begins in a docking area, then takes place on a floating platform that follows the Halberd about. Then it docks on the deck of the Halberd, where the fighters can be subject to the attacks of the Combo Cannon. This includes the giant main laser gun, bombs that fall from the top of the screen, and an extending arm that might strike a random fighter. One of the music tracks that can play on this stage is a heavy metal remix of the Gourmet Race theme, from Kirby Super Star.

Green Greens is a stage based on Kirby’s Dream Land which features Whispy Woods, and two columns of falling Star Blocks with the occasional Bomb Blocks. Whispy acts as an obstacle by blowing at the characters, and dropping apples onto the stage once in a while. The background of the stage has what appears to be an ocean with star-shaped islands, and a rainbow behind the stage. The music is an arrangement of «Green Greens» from Kirby’s Dream Land, and «Kirby’s Triumphant Return,» played at the end of Milky Way Wishes in Kirby Super Star.

Game modes

Super Smash Bros. Brawl featured some modes that were unavailable in the last two games, in addition to the older modes. Classic Mode returns and is kept largely the same. The Adventure Mode, however, was redesigned into a new adventure called the Subspace Emissary, which featured all but three of the playable characters and an actual plot. Porky appears as a boss in this mode, while the King Statue appears as a hazard.

Another mode, known as Masterpieces, allowed players to play demos of games from previous systems, such as Super Metroid and Super Mario Bros. 2. EarthBound was a demo in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl but was removed from the English version due to being a commercial failure outside Japan at the time.

Simplified Sticker Effects

Every character-owned hitbox in the game has an attribute known as its «type». Type is the concept of «what does the damage», and is used for distinguishing Arm attacks from Leg attacks (and so on) to apply stickers correctly. However, there are several clues in the coding of these types that show much more specific classes of attacks that go undifferentiated in the final game.

Type ID Attack type Sticker type
Typeless none
1 Head Head
2 Body Body
3 Butt
4 Hand Arm
5 Elbow
6 Foot Leg
7 Knee
8 Throwing Throwing
9 Weapon Weapon
10 Sword
11 Hammer
12 Explosive Explosive
13 Spin Spin
14 Bite Bite
15 Magic Magic
16 PK PK
17 Bow Weapon
18 unused none
19 Bat Weapon
20 Umbrella
21 Pikmin Pikmin
22 Water Water
23 Whip Weapon
24 Tail Tail
25 Energy Energy

For example, while the game is coded to recognize a difference in Hand and Elbow attacks, they’re both buffed by Arm stickers and so there is no effective difference. More notably, it appears that at some point there were going to be Sword and Hammer stickers, but they all got lumped into Weapon.

There are a few other strange inconsistencies with the type system:

  • All Pit’s attacks that use his bow (including his arrows) are Bow, but Link’s and Toon Link’s arrows are Weapon. Note that the type is called «Bow» because the only known use is on Pit’s bow; given how equipment works in SSB4, it may be that its intended classification is something like «sacred weapon».
  • Ness’s forward smash is Bat, but the Home-Run Bat item is Weapon.
  • Toon Link’s shoulder-tackle of a forward throw is coded as Foot, which is probably proof that his moveset was cribbed from Link and then altered (Link’s forward throw is a kick).
  • Many attacks that don’t appear in the Subspace Emissary don’t have types coded, and are instead Typeless. This includes several Final Smashes (including most of the movesets of Giga Bowser and Wario-Man), carrier items, and assist characters, so if for example one were to hack an explosive Crate into the mode, an Explosives Attack sticker wouldn’t affect it.

Unused Stage Lights

To do:Make renders to demonstrate.

Battlefield has a number of lights in the stage data that are either disabled or have the color set to black.

Normal With Light

Distant Planet has a character light not used in any of the light sets. It would have added a noticeable green glow from below.

Normal With Light

Smashville has a character light not used in any of the light sets for any time of day. It would have added a faint yellowish light from a similar angle as the sun at noon.

Normal With Light

Mario Bros. has another white light coming from the right side. Unlike the other unused lights, this one is included in the character light set and is active, but has the transparency of the color set to max.

Items

Items are a little more difficult to modify.  Item data is stored in system/common3.PAC which can be opened in BrawlBox.  (The main folder named item actually contains Pokemon and Assist Trophy characters)  Inside common3.PAC item models are stored in ItmCommonBrres and the code for what the item does is under ItmCommonParam.   To add item mods you will need to use BrawlBox to replace the individual ARC files for the item.

You can also adjust the spawn frequency for each item in common3.PAC/ItmCommonGen/ItemGeneration/Table/Group.  Pokemon frequency is under Group and Assist Trophy frequency is under Group.  Note that setting the frequency of a Pokemon to 0.00 does not cause it to never appear; it just makes it very rare.  (Jirachi, Celebi, and Mew all have a frequency of 0.00)

Kirby (as a fighter)[edit]

Kirby’s artwork from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Kirby is one of the starter characters in this game. He is notable for his small stature, light weight, and multiple mid-air jumps. His versatility makes him good for beginners, and he can copy the neutral special moves of all the other fighters.

Movesetedit

Most of Kirby’s attacks come from his appearance in Melee, with many of those based on moves from the Kirby series, though some have changed between Melee and Brawl. Kirby’s attacks are as follows:

Standard Groundedit

  • Neutral — Kirby jabs his opponent rapidly, similar to Vulcan Jab.
  • Forward tilt — Kirby does a spinning kick forward — with decent range.
  • Up tilt — Kirby kicks upward behind him.
  • Down tilt — Kirby kicks forward while crouching, sweeping the floor. May trip opponents.
  • Dash attack — Kirby does a Break Spin while moving forward.
  • Forward smash — Kirby does a strong kick as he steps forward. Based on Spin Kick.
  • Up smash — Kirby performs a bicycle kick, doing a back-flip in the process.
  • Down smash — Kirby spins with his feet out, hitting on both sides.

Standard Aerialedit

  • Neutral aerial — Kirby performs the ‘Twinkle Star’ move, spinning with arms and feet extended outward.
  • Forward aerial — Kirby kicks forward three times in succession, with the last hit dealing the most knockback.
  • Back aerial — Kirby kicks out with both feet behind, dealing a quick hit.
  • Up aerial — Kirby flip-kicks upward in mid-air, dealing good knockback.
  • Down aerial — Kirby drills with both feet downward, which can be used to send foes down.

Throwsedit

  • Forward — Kirby flips with his opponent in the air, then pile-drives them into the ground. Based on the Pile Driver move.
  • Back — Kirby performs a backward suplex on his enemy. Based on the Backdrop ability.
  • Up — Kirby flies up off-screen with his foe, then crashes back down. This move is based on the Air Drop technique.
  • Down — Kirby throws his opponent to the ground and pummels them with his feet, similar to the Quick Stamping technique.

Specialedit

  • Inhale — Kirby inhales, which will allow him to swallow up fighters who are close-by (within range of a grab). From there, Kirby can either spit them back out as a temporary Star Bullet, or ‘swallow’ them to copy their neutral special move (and gain a hat based on the fighter swallowed). Kirby can discard this move by taunting or will lose it if he is hit by a strong attack (at random).
  • Hammer — Kirby pulls out his hammer, and swings it after some delay, causing good damage and knockback. Kirby hits twice in the air.
  • Final Cutter — Based on the last hit of the Cutter combo, Kirby takes out a blade, rises into the air, then crashes back down, releasing a shock wave on landing. Kirby can use this move to gain some height when recovering and can grab the ledge with it, but it can be easy to intercept. When falling downward, Kirby can send his opponent flying downward with the blade if timed right.
  • Stone — Kirby transforms into stone and crashes downward. He is invulnerable to all attacks except for grabs while in this form and will damage opponents he collides with while falling.

Final Smashedit

Kirby becomes Cook Kirby, dons his hat, and pulls out a cooking pot. All nearby fighters and items are pulled in, simmered for a time, then launched out, creating Food items in the process.

Strengths and Weaknessesedit

SmashWiki has more information about this subject here.

Kirby is defined by his small stature, his versatility, and his floaty nature, along with his multiple mid-air jumps. These attributes make him a good character for beginners to pick up, as his standard attacks are easy to understand and his jumps allow him to recover easier if he is knocked off the stage. Kirby’s attacks are all useful in their own way, and in certain circumstances, he can rack up a good amount of damage using basic combo strings. His Inhale also allows him to mix up his fighting style by copying other members of the cast.

However, Kirby’s small size makes him easy to launch, and his slow movement speed makes him vulnerable to characters who can outpace him and pick him off from a distance. His attacks are also often outmatched by other characters who have larger and quicker strikes, or who may use his floatiness to keep him from landing after being hit upward. While Kirby can recover from almost any distance when launched, he will have difficulty returning to the stage if a persistent opponent tries to guard the edge or strike him while off-stage.

King Dedede (as a fighter)[edit]

King Dedede’s artwork from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

King Dedede is one of the starter characters in this game, making his first appearance as a fighter here. He is a very heavy fighter, with slow but strong attacks and a powerful grab-game. Despite his size, King Dedede has a very high recovery, with 4 mid-air jumps and his Super Dedede Jump to pick up the slack.

Movesetedit

Plenty of King Dedede’s attacks were made up for this game, though a few bear reference to his moves in the Kirby series. King Dedede’s attacks are as follows:

Standard Groundedit

  • Neutral — King Dedede swipes up to two times with his hammer, then proceeds into a spinning hammer move which acts as a rapid jab.
  • Forward tilt — King Dedede thrusts his hammer forward and spins it. This move has incredible range.
  • Up tilt — King Dedede thrusts his head upward, covering a surprising amount of space.
  • Down tilt — King Dedede swipes the ground with his foot.
  • Dash attack — King Dedede trips and falls on his face, in a move with a slow start-up but great knockback. This move is based on his body slam attack from the Kirby series.
  • Forward smash — King Dedede lifts his hammer up slowly, then sends it crashing down in front of him, dealing huge knockback if it connects.
  • Up smash — King Dedede swipes his hammer over his head in an arc.
  • Down smash — King Dedede spins his hammer around himself on the floor, hitting one side, then the other.

Standard Aerialedit

  • Neutral aerial — King Dedede puffs up and extends his limbs, hitting foes that make contact.
  • Forward aerial — King Dedede swings his hammer in front of himself.
  • Back aerial — King Dedede throws one foot behind him to kick opponents.
  • Up aerial — King Dedede thrusts his hammer upward, spinning it like a drill.
  • Down aerial — King Dedede falls while he spins his hammer beneath like a drill.

Throwsedit

  • Forward — King Dedede smacks his opponent with the hammer, sending them forward.
  • Back — King Dedede tosses his opponent behind then smacks them with his hammer.
  • Up — King Dedede tosses his opponent into the air by jabbing them with his hands.
  • Down — King Dedede slams his opponent into the ground, then sits on them. Can be chained in certain situations.

Specialedit

  • Inhale — King Dedede inhales, sucking in opponents who are fairly close to him. He cannot swallow like Kirby, but he can spit them out as a Star Bullet which deals more damage and goes further.
  • Waddle Dee Toss — King Dedede pulls out either a Waddle Dee, a Waddle Doo or a Gordo and tosses them at his opponent. If they land on the ground, they will linger, with Waddle Doo occasionally shooting beams.
  • Super Dedede Jump — Based on his jump attack from the Kirby series, King Dedede rises high into the air, then comes crashing back down, causing Drop Stars to appear on each side of him when he lands. It can be used for recovery, but cannot grab ledges on the way down unless canceled.
  • Jet Hammer — King Dedede’s hammer sprouts an engine, and begins charging up. King Dedede can then release a powerful hammer swipe. It will start hurting him if he charges too long, though.

Final Smashedit

King Dedede calls his army of Waddle Dees and other baddies, then he starts dancing while they storm the stage, damaging any enemy fighters they touch.

King Dedede has very powerful moves, good recovery in his four jumps, which, when coupled with Super Dedede Jump, provides him one of the least punishable recoveries in the game. In addition to that, Dedede has many options for scoring KOs, with his good range on his attacks, particularly his side tilt, and he has an amazing grab game, which can effectively reduce two-thirds of the cast’s stocks quickly due to his down throw’s set knockback. However, he lacks speed compared to other fighters, as his aerial movement is low and his dashing speed is the third slowest in-game. He also is vulnerable to chain throws and combos himself due to his high weight and falling speed. However, his pros overshadow most of his cons.

Items[edit]

Many items from the Kirby series can appear during standard gameplay. These include:

  • Apple — Dropped by Whispy Woods on the ‘Green Greens’ stage, and can also appear elsewhere. Will act either as a Food item or as a projectile weapon. Has a small chance of exploding if the latter.
  • Dragoon — Like its appearance in Kirby Air Ride, it comes in three separate pieces, which the fighters must grapple with each-other to collect. Once someone has all three pieces, the Dragoon assembles and that fighter flies off on it. They can then crash through the stage in a targeted assault, dealing huge knockback to anyone in its path.
  • Maxim Tomato — Reduces up to 50% damage.
  • Star Rod — A battering item that also fires out up to 16 Star Bullets if swung hard.
  • Superspicy Curry — When a fighter eats it, they will continuously shoot fireballs out of their mouth, and cannot move slowly. The fire can combo with their normal attacks.
  • Warp Star — When a fighter mounts it, they will fly haphazardly upward, then crash down, dealing big explosive damage to any enemy caught in its path. The landing site can be altered slightly.

In addition, Knuckle Joe may appear from an assist trophy. He will jump about, and attempt to pummel any enemy fighter he encounters. His Rising Break is very deadly.
